Clay Life

Art comes in many forms, but rarely do you see it displayed tasteful with clay, specifically characters made from clay. Lisa Mathews a self-taught artist from Dayton, OH breaks the stereotype of traditional art with her unique form of visual art. Lisa a mother of two creates characters with polymer clay, she began pursuing her career with no experience and all the will. Determined to leave corporate America she began to blaze her own trail, educating herself in the field of clay characters Lisa started making beautiful pieces for decoration then taking it a step further creating customized chess pieces.  Ever since Lisa swallowed her fears and followed her artistic  dreams her work has been exhibited and noticed across the country at art festivals and galleries, in 2012 she was awarded “Best in Show” from the International Polymer Clay association for her sculptures. She is truly a gem and we look forward to seeing her growth. Check out her work below and as always…

Groovy

Schoolboy Q has returned with a grainy, dark new video and single, establishing the alter ego character “Groovy Tony” and setting the tone for his untitled follow up to 2014’s Oxymoron. Q mentions his west coast, rap roots while instituting a frightening, Sin City-esque universe where “Groovy Tony” is king. Roaming the remains of dead bodies and shooting off a gun accompanied by a female who helps him destroy evidence and run off with bags filled with cash. It’s been a while since Schoolboy has dropped a project and we are excited to hear more and follow his new artist endeavors. Click the link below to hear and see the latest from Q and as always.

Resurrecting Art

Bronx-raised Awol erizku saw a lack of positive representation for members of his community, particularly in high art. To answer this, Erizku supplants iconic works from the masters of Renaissance art like Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Caravaggio but using primarily black models, whom he scouts from the streets. His strong art education- BA from Cooper Union School of Art and MFA from Yale’s Visual Arts program- makes him a force to be reckoned with, growing up in New York Awol befriended many musicians like A$AP Ferg  from whom he drew inspiration. Awol experienced high end fashion by attending the world’s most prestige art schools but he also had his ear to the streets with his humble upbringing. His portraits are powered by colorful characters and sculptures from historical time. His aesthetics reference cultural trends like hip-hop and basketball as well as maintain a crossing between pop art and minimalism. Erizku’s long- term project is to remove the labeling of a black artist as being only concerned with making “black art”, and in doing so, he hopes to elevate blackness in the library of art history. His art sparks conversation, and stirs controversies by taking historical images and adding his artistic perspective, some may think this to be criminal but isn’t all art inspired from other artist? I’ll let you be the judge, stream the video below to see Awol work and as always…

Eargasm of the Week: “Is It Possible” by China-Marie

Da Bassment’s Eargasm of the Week goes to “Is It Possible” by China-Marie. This smooth melodic tune is the 1st single from her highly anticipated debut EP Potpurri. The acoustic feel of the song provides a breath of fresh air compared to some of the 808 heavy R&B out today. The way China-Marie’s sweet vocals seem to float over the track makes you wonder how is it possible NOT to love this stunning songstress. Be on the lookout for Potpurri which is set to release this month, but in the meantime “Is It Possible” is available on iTunes, Spotify, and Soundcloud.

The Reach

Although California has been in a recent drought there has been no shortage of good music from The Golden State, which is evident on the up-and-coming artist Boogie’s 2015 mixtape The Reach. Growing up in the gang-infested culture that traps so many fellow Compton youth Boogie uses The Reach to give his perspective of the strife and struggles he’s witnessed in his lifetime. This lyrical assassin put his skills on display from the intro, having no features from any other rappers but still managing to keep the listeners engaged on every song. The thing that stands out most about the project is Boogie’s lack of fear allowing the listener into his world, whether he is speaking on his family, his environment, or getting shot and bouncing back better than ever. This thought provoking mixtape can be seen as a sign of inspiration for those who are currently where Boogie has been, showing them that it is possible to make it over your obstacles. Be expecting big things in 2016 from Boogie as he has recently signed a deal with Interscope Records.
